24
1
2 The most substantial burden to family-owned farms, particularly large conventional farms is the
3 costs associated from owning property. The Present-Use Value Taxation program offers some
4 financial assistance to active farmers, but it does -not help new farmers buy land nor does it
5 reduce the incentive for retiring farmers to sell their land to non-agricultural interests.
6 According to the Orange County Tax Assessor's Office, 2,666 parcels were enrolled in the
7 Present-Use Value program in 2008-encompassing 109,463 acres, or 43% of Orange County's
8 total land area. Cedar Grove Township, retains the largest percentage of enrollment, despite
9 the being hardest hit by the tobacco buy-out.
10
11
12
13
14
15
Present-Use Value Taxation Enrollment, 2008
18,000 - ---- - - - ----- -- --
- ------

16,000 ~
-- _ _
-
---- - - -- __-a
14,000 ~ - ~~~ - ~
12,000 r2 - - -- --- - -- -
Acres `~ ~
10,000 -~ -- -.
