Orange County Agricultural Preservation Board
Memorandum
To: Board of County Commissioners
From: Roland Walters, Chair, Agricultural Preservation Board
Date: August 18, 2009
Subject: Orange County Farmland Protection Plan
The Orange County Agricultural Preservation Board (APB) is pleased to present a draft of the
Orange County Farmland Protection Plan (FPP) for your review and consideration. The FPP
is the result of roughly a year and a half of work and several months of revision.
The APB held two meetings with the other key agricultural advisory boards and their staff- -
the Soil and Water Conservation District Commission, the Farm Services Board of Supervisors
and the Cooperative Extension Advisory Council. Both meetings were well attended and
productive. Comments from the sessions were incorporated into the document and
resubmitted to the three boards to ensure that their thoughts had been accurately captured
and that the final version warranted their support.
Consistent with the 2030 Comprehensive Plan, the FPP builds on the goals and objectives
outlined in the Agricultural Chapter of the Natural and Cultural Systems Element and should
serve as the strategic plan for county agricultural activities for years to come. The adoption
of a farmland protection plan also provides additional funding opportunities through the
Agricultural Development and Farmland Preservation Trust Fund. (Please see the attached
brochure for more information.)
We welcome the opportunity to answer questions or provide additional information on this
important document.
Thank you for your continued support of this project and your continued support of local
agriculture.
5
