85
couple,of enterprises that will not locate here because of the prohibition. These include In-
n-Out Burger and Walgreen's. I am sure there must be others of which we are unaware.
However, the drive thru prohibition has grown into a hallmark of our community.
Fortunately, the City of San Luis Obispo enjoys a high level of interest from businesses
wishing to locate here. This did not change with the prohibition. In fact, in the intervening
years, it seems that our Downtown and mail areas have continued to grow and prosper
despite the rigors of our permitting processes and various regulations. I do not track the
effects of the prohibition and do not know of any studies done prior to adoption so do not
have any hard data to offer you.
I hope this "sense" of the economics will help you with your considerations. Good luck.
Sincerely,
Claire
Claire 8. We are looking at possibly modifying our Zoning Ordinance to limit or
more strongly regulate drive - throughs in the county and I am trying to gather as much
Information as possible regarding the impacts other communities have experienced due
to regulations or prohibitions.
I understand San Luis Obispo has had a long - standing prohibition of new drive- throughs
in the city. What, if any, economic impacts has the city experienced as a result of the
drive through prohibition? Has the city experienced any issues with business
recruitment or backlash from the business- community? Any positive economic results?
Any information you may have on the economic impacts of your city's drive -through
prohibition would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time and assistance with this matter.
SANTA CRUZ, CALIFORNIA
• population (01/01/04): 56,300
• 12 square miles in area
• Median Household Income (1999): $50,605
• Median Home Value (2000): $411,900
• located on the northern part of Monterey Bay, approximately 74 miles south of
San Francisco
• home of UC Santa Cruz
