It serves as an expression of the community, as well as a landmark. It
helps to define the county's identity and sense of place.
• Public Art promotes social interaction'and discourse and teaches us about each
other.
• Public Art promotes creative collaborations.
• Public Art can memorialize the past as well as express shared values for the future.
All great civilizations are recognized by the presence of public art.
• Public Art projects demonstrate how art that is integrated into its site enhances civic
architecture and a wide range of public spaces.
• The Orange County of Town of Chapel Hill established a Percent for Art
Ordinance in 2002. This ordinance allocates 1 % of selected capital projects for the
creation, fabrication/construction, installation, and maintenance of permanent works
of public art. Funding comes from each project's construction budget, which
can include Federal, State, County, Town and private support.
The MOST EFFECTIVE way to CONSISTENTLY support public 'art
and design is through a Percent for Art Ordinance.
In the ABSENCE of legislation,
support for public art in governmental facilities
is a HIT OR MISS proposition.
