ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Action Agenda
Item No. S-b
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: December 1, 1998
SUBJECT: Carrboro At-Risk Youth Committee
DEPARTMENT: County Manager PUBLIC HEARING: YES: NO:X
BUDGET AMENDMENT: YES: NO: X
ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: Sharron Siler
TELEPHONE NUMBERS: 2300
Hillsborough -732-8181
Chapel Hill -968-4501
Durham -688-7331
Mebane -227-2031
PURPOSE: To advise the Board about a work group effort between the Towns of Chapel Hill and
Carrboro designed to address at-risk youth.
BACKGROUND: At the request of Carrboro Alderman Hank Anderson, the Town of Carrboro
approved a resolution in March 1998 to pursue joint recreation programming opportunities with the
Town of Chapel Hill. Jacquelyn Gist currently represents the Town of Carrboro on the committee.
In July 1998, the Chapel Hill Town Council appointed council members, Flicka Bateman and Julie
McClintock to serve as representatives on the Carrboro Aldermen's At-Risk Youth Committee.
The focus of the work group is to review current programs serving at-risk youth and identify
opportunities for establishing collaborative efforts and resources. Before his death, Hank Anderson
contacted the County about participating in this effort. The meetings, which began in October, have
been attended by county staff. Local organizations serving at-risk youth have provided the group
with an overview of their services and needs. The Manager suggests that the committee also review
the Juvenile Services Annual Report and other related information for this population.
The committee has requested participation by a member(s) of the Board of County Commissioners.
Kathryn Spatz, Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Director, is available to answer questions.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board designate the Chair to serve
on this committee.
