4 <br />Triangle J Council of Governments <br />Economic Development Report to Local Governments <br />Summary of 1997/98 Accomplishments <br />Strategic Economic Planning and Cooperation <br />1. Promoted regional cooperation among chambers and local governments <br />and among other key groups involved in the Triangle Region's community <br />and economic development efforts. Served with local economic development <br />groups. Participated in the Wake County Economic Development <br />Commission's planning process. Assisted communities and counties with <br />planning exercises. Created in early 1998 and will maintain a coalition of <br />businesses to support the Air Awareness program to help keep the Triangle <br />from exceeding emissions limits established by the federal air quality program. <br />2. Made presentations to industrial clients for the State Department of <br />Commerce, for various chambers and for county economic development <br />commissions throughout the region and the state. Served on international <br />trade and business development panels and programs throughout the state. <br />3. TJCOG provided staff support for the Greater Triangle Regional Council, a <br />body whose purpose is to create the vision and assist in setting the direction <br />for the Region's future. One of the key goals of the GTRC is to examine <br />regional development choices as the population grows by another 600,000 over <br />the next generation. The GTRC seeks to build on the recognized assets of the <br />Research Triangle Park, Raleigh - Durham International Airport, and Umstead <br />State Park. Planned and staffed the World Class Region Conference 1998. The <br />conference was a successful undertaking that brought together over 650 <br />regional leaders and citizens to consider development scenarios and options <br />for the future. <br />4. Worked on the projects with the RDU International Airport staff including <br />efforts to increase the number of airlines serving the area and the frequency <br />and destinations of daily passenger and cargo departures. Worked on <br />developing with IBM and RDU a prototype kiosk with inter - active computer <br />to assist both domestic and international visitors. <br />Activities to Internationalize the Region's Economy <br />1. Served as the grantee for Foreign Trade Zone n93; made numerous <br />presentations and conducted the meetings of the Rates, Tariff, and Legal <br />Review Board. Responsible for the FTZ Subzones, the largest of which, #93 B, <br />IBM was deactivated. Prepared several boundary modifications, both in the <br />Triangle and around the state. Assisted #93 Operator, Longistics (formerly <br />Long International Logistics Services, Inc.) in marketing the Zone to <br />
