ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />PROCLAMATION <br />CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY <br />IN ORANGE COUNTY <br />WHEREAS, strong mental health is essential to the success of a child; and <br />ti <br />WHEREAS, according to the United States Department of Health and Human Services, at least <br />one in five children and adolescents have a mental health disorder with one in 10, or about 6 <br />million people, suffering from a serious emotional disturbance; and <br />WHEREAS, mental health disorders can have negative impacts on behavior, school <br />performance and concentration; and <br />WHEREAS, untreated mental health disorders can lead to alcohol and drug abuse, violence, <br />and life threatening behaviors; and <br />WHEREAS, an awareness of mental health services extended through Orange County schools <br />can lead to diagnoses and treatments of mental health disorders; and <br />WHEREAS, opportunities exist as parents, teachers, guidance counselors, neighbors, friends, <br />and other concerned adults to reach out to the youth of Orange County in need and help supply <br />education, information, and mental health resources; and <br />WHEREAS, Orange County government has been engaged and proactive through the Orange- <br />Person-Chatham Area Authority in supporting a network of providers responding to youth in <br />need; <br />NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby proclaim May <br />7, 2009 as CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY in Orange County and <br />commend it to County residents. <br />This the 5th day of May, 2009. <br />~~ ~. <br />Valerie Foushee, Chair <br />Orange County Board of Commissioners <br />
