Eligible projects include azchitectural and <br />azcheological surveys, preparation of nominations to the National Register of Historic <br />Places, and preservation plans. <br />This yeaz, an estimated $70,000-$130,000 (depending upon Congressional action) may be <br />available for preservation grants to local communities or nonprofit organizations. In <br />accordance with federal requirements, $65-70,000 is reserved for grants to communities, <br />such as Orange County, that participate in the Certified Local Government (CLG) <br />program. Grant awazds, representing up to 60% of estimated project costs, aze generally <br />in the $5-15,000 range. <br />Grant applications must be completed and submitted to the SHPO by January 31, 1999. <br />Grant awazds will be announced in late March or early April 1999. All grant-awazded <br />projects must be completed by September 30, 2000. <br />The attached 1999 Historic Preservation Fund grant application requests funding of $6,000 <br />to complete a nomination of The Oaks Rural Historic Landscape District to the National <br />Register of Historic Places. The total project cost of the National Register nomination is <br />estimated to be $12,000. The grant would be matched by $4,000 County funds and <br />$2,000 County in-kind services. The County match would be included in the FY1999- <br />2000 budget. <br />During the inventory of historic resources in the unincorporated portions of Orange <br />County, The Oaks Crossroads was placed on the National Register Study List as a district <br />deemed potentially eligible for the National Register by the North Carolina National <br />
