Fikes <br />Information Sheet TELEPHONE NUMBERS: - -eat. 2490 <br />Timeline Hillsborough 732-8181 <br /> Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br /> Durham 688-7331 <br /> Mebane 227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: <br />To adopt a resolution in support of County elected officials and staff volunteering to help construct <br />a home during the "Celebration 2000" Millennium Event sponsored by Habitat for Humanity of <br />Orange County, NC, Inc.. <br />BACKGROUND: <br />In celebration of a new millennium, and to increase public awazeness of the lack of affordable <br />housing in Orange County, Habitat for Humanity of Orange County is planning to develop a 4.86 <br />acre tract of land on Rogers Road in central Orange County by January 1, 2000. Specifically, a <br />"community-wide building blitz" is planned in order to construct eleven (11) single family homes <br />for ownership by Orange County families who eazn below 50% of the azea median income, and, <br />who currently live in substandazd housing. On April 7, 1998, the BOCC adopted a resolution of <br />support for this event. <br />At this time, Habitat is asking that local government elected officials and employees partner with a <br />local, professional organization to sponsor a home in the Rogers Road neighborhood. Specifically, <br />while the local organization is able to raise most of the funds required for the home, volunteers will <br />be needed to perform actual construction duties. Thus, Habitat is asking that Orange County, <br />Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and Hillsborough elected officials and employees volunteer to help construct <br />a home in this neighborhood. <br />A representative of Habitat for Humanity will be present to provide more details regarding this <br />proposal. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): <br />The Manager recommends adopting a resolution in support of County elected officials and staff <br />volunteering to help construct a home during the "Celebration 2000" Millennium Event sponsored <br />by Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, NC, Inc.. <br />
