Need for a Orange County Strategic Aging Plan
1. The Retirement Aging population is mushrooming between now and the year 2020
with the Baby boomers reaching retirement age. (How old will you be in the year
2020 ?)
In fact, Orange County is projected to have 131.6% increase in 65+ population
between 1996 -2020.
In terms of numbers, Orange County's older 65+ population will increase from 9,308
(1996) to a projected 21,553 in 2020.
A. In comparison, there will only be a 38.1% increase among all ages in Orange
County.
B. Compared to other counties, Orange County will have the third highest increase
(behind Wake - 179.3% and Onslow - 134.3 %) of the 100 NC Counties.
C. Compared to North Carolina as a whole, the state's 65+ population will increase
76.2% between 1996 -2020.
2. We must plan now for a model community that focuses on promoting wellness and
independence for all Older Adults regardless of their functional capacity,
3. We must employ a process that is unified (public and private involvement) and
develop a plan that is comprehensive (covering all aspects of aging).
4. The Aging Plan would be a five year strategic plan requiring annual updates.
1/16/99
FN:Need- pin.doc
If
