Orange County
Board of Commissioners
Action Agenda Item Abstract
Meeting Date: February 16, 1999
Action Agenda
Item No. g-h
Subject: Re-establish Grant-Funded Deputy Sheriff I Position
Department: Sheriff Public Hearing: Yes No X
Budget Amendment
Needed: Yes X No
Attachment(s): Information Contact:
Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass, Extension 2900
Elaine Holmes, Personnel Director
Extension 2550
Telephone Number:
Hillsborough 732-8181
Chapel Hill 968-4501
Durham 688-7331
Mebane 227-2031
Purpose: To re-establish a permanent full-time Deputy Sheriff I position (1.0 full
time equivalent) to be funded from grant funds received from the U. S.
Department of Justice.
Background: During the 1998-99 budget process, a permanent full-time grant
funded Deputy Sheriff I position in the Sheriffs Department was
eliminated because the grant funds had ended. The 1.0 full time
equivalent for the position was deleted from the budget. This position
was the original COPSFAST position. The responsibilities of this
position are patrol duties.
The U.S. Department of Justice recently notified the Sheriffs
Department that it has approved a continuation grant to partially offset
the costs associated with the eliminated position. The salary and
benefit costs of the position total about $36,000 annually. The
Department of Justice approved continuation funds of $15,000. This
fully funds the position through the remainder of the 1998-99 fiscal
year.
During the course of the budget process for fiscal year 1999-00, the
Sheriff plans to propose the County assume funding for the position in
that fiscal year, when the grant funds will end. That position request
will be addressed by Commissioners along with other position
requests in the budget process for 1999-00.
