7.0 Projected Traffic Volumes
7.1 Existing Traffic
Both AM and PM peak- turning movement counts were performed for the following
studied intersection:
■. US 70 Business and Lawrence Road -- (count performed on February 17, 1998)
■ NC 86 and Old NC 10 -- (count performed on February 17, 1998)
• US 70 Bypass and US 70 Business -- (count performed February 18 -19, 1998)
• Existing traffic volumes were estimated at the intersection of Lawrence Road at Old
NC 10 based on the above counts.
Figure 4 shows the existing AM and PM peak -hour traffic volumes at the four
intersections.
7.2 Historical Growth Traffic
Historical growth traffic is the increase in traffic volumes due to usage increases and
non - specific growth throughout the area. Using volumes published in the North Carolina
Department of Transportation County Traffic Maps, it was determined that the traffic on
US 70 Business, Old NC 10, and NC 86 grows at an annual rate of approximately 3.0
percent, while an annual growth rate of 5.0 percent was used for Lawrence Road. This
growth factor is reflected in the capacity analyses herein.
7.3 Total Traffic
The distributed proposed. project traffic was assigned to the subdivision access points
and adjacent roadway network and added to the existing plus background traffic. The
AM and PM peak -hour turning movements for affected drives and intersections were
then calculated and analyzed for the year 2003.
Figure 5 shows AM peak -hour existing plus background, proposed project, and total
traffic volumes. Figure 6 shows PM peak -hour existing plus background, proposed
project, and total traffic volumes.
-13-
15 17
