• <br />• <br />66 <br />Examples of Services <br />Health Surveillance Programs: <br />• Vital statistics - monitoring death certificates for unusual patterns of infant and <br />other mortalities according to cause, race or residence. <br />• Communicable disease reporting - following the incidence of cases of <br />gastroenteritis to find epidemics such as the hamburger- related E. coil illness <br />In Washington State in 1993. <br />• Chronic disease registries - such as the birth date= registry which helps <br />identify unusual clusters of birth defects and their causes. <br />Health Protection Programs: <br />• Drinking water monitoring - to identify bacterial or chemical contamination of wells <br />or water supplies before people in the community are made ill. <br />• Food sanitation - inspecting restaurants to prevent poor food handling practices <br />that could spread hepatitis or gastroenteritis. <br />• Toxic chemical regulation - monitoring storage and disposal of chemicals to <br />protect neighbors, children or workers from toxic exposure. <br />• Occupational safety - conducting studies of occupational illness and injury and <br />Intervening as necessary. <br />. Personal Preventive Services: <br />• Immunization - requiring school entry Immunization to protect children and the <br />community from outbreaks of diphtheria, measles, and polio. <br />• Communicable disease investigation - investigating cases of tuberculosis to <br />identify contacts and protect others from spread of the bacteria. <br />Health Promotion Programs: <br />• Alcohol and drug education - informing teenagers of consequences of alcohol <br />and drug use; drinking and driving - to protect others in the community as well <br />as protecting youth. <br />• Tobacco control - smoking education and regulation of availability of tobacco to <br />youth in order to prevent lung cancer and heart disease. <br />• Injury and violence prevention - organizing community-wide initiatives to <br />prevent intentional injuries and violence. <br />Services Which Improve Access to Care: <br />• Information and referral - assisting the needy and disabled in finding appropriate <br />health care facilities. <br />• Public health nursing home visits - Identifying families needing prenatal care, <br />child health care or child abuse prevention. <br />• Case management - providing supervision and coordination of health care for <br />the chronically mentally ill and disabled. <br />• Facilitating new resource development - working with hospitals and physicians <br />to establish needed services, clinics or programs. <br />
