Additional donations could be <br /> solicited to create a `living legacy.' <br /> In fulfilling Ms. Wall's bequest the library would: <br /> • Dedicate the large meeting room on the main floor in Rebecca Wall's honor, this <br /> naming process to be presented at the next board meeting <br /> • Display in the meeting room the portrait of Thomas Ruffin's law office, painted on a tray <br /> by Miss Wall. <br /> The letter written by Mr. Gledhill to the library indicated that we would be using the funds in <br /> accordance with Ms. Wall's will. <br /> The Board could further explore the development of a Heritage Center with community assets <br /> from the library, Alliance for Historic Hillsborough and its other supporting organizations, such <br /> as, the Burwell School and the Hillsborough Museum. These future discussions, which I have <br /> already begun with Ms. Elizabeth Reed, who is here this evening about convening a <br /> workgroup on a Heritage Center, including potential partners that can evaluate the scope, <br /> administration, collection and public participation of a proposed Heritage Center. This type of <br /> Center could be utilized for tourism and Economic Development for Orange County and <br /> continue to enhance the important historical position of Hillsborough, NC. <br /> At this point I will be more than happy to answer any questions the Board may have. <br /> Commissioner Gordon said that she would like to enter her memo for this item into the <br /> record. <br /> MEMORANDUM <br /> To: BOCC and Manager <br /> From: Alice Gordon <br /> Re: Orange County Library Services and Facilities <br /> Date: April 24, 2009 <br /> Over the last few years there have been several Library Services Task Force (LSTF) reports. <br /> The ones I am referencing in this memorandum were produced in 2001, 2004, and 2007. At a <br /> recent commissioners meeting, the Board had questions about those reports and related <br /> issues about library services. In this memorandum I have summarized some of the essential <br /> points from the reports, and provided comments about next steps. My sources include the <br /> task force reports as well as agenda materials and minutes of commissioner meetings. <br /> A. 2001 Task Force <br /> The 2001 task force report was a 52 page document that provided an extensive compilation of <br /> services and facilities, and the LSTF recommendations. <br />
