Orange County NC Website
7
Good Evening,
I am Lucinda Munger, Orange County Library Director.
Thank you for allowing me to report on the North Carolina collection, its possible location within
the new library on West Margaret Lane, and the proposed disposition of the bequest of Ms.
Rebecca Wall.
Beginning this past January my primary responsibility has been to proceed with an orderly
transition from the current facility to the new library on West Margaret Lane. Of special
concern to us, and many others, has been the NC Room History Room collection, where we
have worked with specialists from the State Archives, genealogist from the NC State Library,
the curator of the NC Room UNC Wilson Library, plus consulted with other area public libraries
with local history collections.
Throughout the entire process the goals for the collection have been:
Maintain public accessibility
Best preservation and protection for the long-term sustainability of the collection.
After this long and thorough evaluation process, the findings and conclusions including specific
steps are outlined in more detail with support documentation, in the Executive Report. These
include:
Assign to the State Archives those original documents that have been stored away and
unavailable for public access due to age and deteriorating condition._These items include
sheriff's records, trial court records, justice dockets, and execution dockets from the 1700
and 1800's. These types of documents are routinely housed & preserved at the NC
Archives.
Offer at the new library facility on W. Margaret Lane a focused or "core collection" of local
histories and genealogy documents guided by recommendations of the state genealogist
and other local history librarians that reflect historical Orange County and its origins. This
constitutes about 90% of the current collection.
This collection can be maintained under current preservation practices and will be located
in the new facility on the 2nd floor near the reference collection and staff. This will provide
for an enhanced experience for the patrons since staff will be available at all times to
answer questions and monitor collection use. The microfilm, vertical file and NC periodicals
will also be on the same floor near the collection.
The picture of the Confederate Triad will be insured for $1000 and will also be housed in
the new library.
The library proposes using the interest from the Wall bequest to provide for support for the
collection, especially in the areas of acquisition of new/additional materials and if need be the
preservation of older items. It would also provide additional staff training in historical
collections, provide funds for matching grants in order to provide on-going programming
honoring Miss Wall and serving as a stimulus for economic tourism development.
