~i~ <br />Chairman Garrett stated that the next item for discussion was <br />T-40. <br />The Chairman read a Resolution of Comment an T-40. She requested <br />that an additional paragraph be added to the resolution regarding the <br />comprehensive plan for the area connecting Dake Forest lands with the <br />Chapel Hill, Durham, and Hillsborough communities. The Board agreed <br />to the additional paragraph and the Resolution reads as follows= <br />"WHEREAS, Any routing of I-40 through Orange County <br />will cause dislocation and do violence to <br />human and wildlife habitats therein; and <br />WHEREAS, Orange County through its Planning Depart- <br />ment has conducted extensive public meetings <br />in Chapel Hill Township in order to develop <br />a comprehensive plan for that area and that <br />the citizens have responded with the desire <br />for a rura,~ environment and a green belt <br />connecting Duke Forest Lands with the Chapel <br />Hill, Hillsborough, and Durham communities; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, Of the possible routings, Alternate 4 requires <br />the least new construction; requires the least <br />elisplacement of businesses and families; re- <br />quires no new stream crossings; and causes a <br />relatively slight loss of wildlife habitat <br />acreage; and <br />NOW,.T'HEREFORE, BE IT RE50LVED <br />By the Orange County Board of Commissioners <br />that the Board continues to appose all the <br />I-40 Alternate routes through Orange County <br />but-finds Alternate 4 the least objectionable <br />of the possiblities; aril <br />BE TT FURTHER RESOLVED <br />That the Board continues to express its interest <br />in the desperately needed improvements to NC High- <br />. way 54 East and NC Highway 85. <br />This the 28th day of June,~:1976." <br />Mr. G. P. Sykes, a Orange County resident was present and requested <br />permission to speak on T-40. He stated that he felt a good idea for <br />T-40 is from the Research Triangle area to follow Highway 54 to <br />Graham and then continue on T-85. He requested the Board to consider <br />this suggestion. <br />Commissioner Whitted stated that this was not one of the proposed <br />corridors. <br />Chairman Garrett stated that the Department of Transportation had <br />said that there is not enough money to route through Chapel Hi11. <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Whitted, seconded by Commissioner <br />Pinney, it was moved and adopted that the Resolution of Comment on <br />I-40 be approved and be presented at the Public Hearing on June 29, 1976. <br />Chairman Garrett asked that it be entered into the record that <br />the Energy Task Force Report and the proposed_'LandmPlan for Chapel Hill <br />Town, the Eno River Task Force Report and the Growth Options Conference <br />_ Report be presented at the Public Hearing. <br />She stated that it had also been suggested that maps of the pro- <br />. posed Y-40 alternates be erected. <br />The meeting was then adjourned. <br />~~~~~~ <br />Flora R.
