Economic Vitality and Quality <br />Goal 1. Encourage Employment Opportunities that Pay a Living Wage <br />Objectives: <br />® Encourage businesses offering mid -wage, mid -skill jobs <br />Goal 2. Promote Business Diversity <br />Objectives. <br />® Encourage entrepreneurship, particularly UNC- related spin -offs, small scale, innovative <br />agriculture, and heritage arts programs to attract tourism <br />® Increase viability of agriculture as a business (through increasing public awareness and <br />examining agricultural regulations and removing any unnecessary ones) <br />Goal 3. Link Economy and Environmental Concerns <br />Objectives: <br />• Encourage environmentally - friendly businesses and business activities (such as recycling, <br />eco- industrial parks) that protect the resource base and reduce waste <br />• Capitalize on business opportunities related to creation of environmentally sound and <br />efficient transportation systems <br />• Seek to keep money within the local economy in order to enhance local job opportunities <br />and reduce energy consumption and pollution associated with transportation <br />Management of Growth and Development <br />Goal 1. Encourage and Coordinate Planning Among Major Institutions, Towns, County and Region <br />Objectives: <br />® Lobby the NC General Assembly for a statewide planning mechanism that would require <br />regional planning and local government cooperation <br />® Create, coordinate and implement a countywide comprehensive plan <br />m Pursue a coordinated, regional approach for protecting natural resources <br />Goal 2. Promote Land Use Patterns that Combine the Needs of People and Protect Natural Resources <br />Objectives: <br />® Identify and promote areas of denser, mixed -use development within existing service <br />districts and future transit corridor nodes <br />® Protect the quality of natural resources including open space, and protect the integrity of <br />the rural buffer <br />• Promote development that combines people's needs - work, home, schools, and services <br />• Provide a range of development choices <br />• Improve and streamline development review process for commercial and residential <br />development; encourage clear guidelines and positive incentives for developments that <br />meet the community's goals <br />Goal 3. Ensure Infrastructure Provision is Regionally Coordinated and Supports Other County and <br />Town Land Use Development Goals <br />Objectives. <br />Encourage coordination of local and regional water /sewer boundaries <br />Be aware of impacts of infrastructure on natural areas and integrate into planning process <br />
