economic development. Finally, the draft was sent to staff at the North Carolina
Department of Agriculture and N.C. State University for review, and their comments
have been incorporated.
Because of the considerable financial and strategic planning benefits associated
with having such a plan, adoption of a Farmland Protection Plan was identified as
an objective in Agricultural Chapter of 2030 Comarehensive Plan, Natural and
Cultural Systems Element. Moreover, the adoption of a countywide farmland
protection plan is now recommended by the N.C. General Statutes as needed
background for other agricultural program cost-shares, possible future
agricultural funding options, and specifically provides additional funding
opportunities through the Agricultural Development and Farmland Preservation
Trust Fund.
Since the plan is a rather substantial document, we would like to share the working draft
as a report item at this time, and pursue formal consideration and eventual adoption at a
later meeting in the early fall. If you have questions or need additional information,
please feel free contact Tina Moon (cmoonCa~co.orange.nc.us) or myself
(dstancilCa~co.orange.nc.us). We hope that the eventual adoption of this plan will
provide an important next step toward the promotion of agricultural enterprise and
preservation in Orange County.
Attachments: ADFP Program Brochure
Draft Farmland Protection Plan
