18 <br />NPS Form 10-9o0-a OMB No. 1 U24-0018 <br />(8-86) <br />United States Department of the Interior <br />National Park Service <br />NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES <br />CONTINUATION SHEET <br />Section 7 Page 7 Murphey School <br />name of property <br />Orange County, NC <br />. - county and state <br />Water Tower <br />c. 1936, Contributing Structure <br />Constructed of metal, the water tower occupies part of the south yard behind the school. lts <br />"-cylindrical tank sits atop metal trusses and supports; a ventral water pipe and three supports at <br />the outer edges of the tower that terminate at concrete blocks on the ground. Afull-length metal <br />access stair still exists; it is attached to the side of the tank and one of its supports. An article in <br />the Chapel Hill Weekly o_ n May 22, '193fi stated, "The water tank on its long stilts is pain#ed green <br />and tucked cleverly in a clump of trees, so that it does not stand forth against the sky startlingly as <br />tanks often do.A~ <br />Maintenance Trailer - <br />c. 1980-1990, Non-Contributing Building - <br />A single-wide trailer with a rounded bow-front eight pane bay window on the north elevation. Both <br />the east and west elevations have an attached woode-n porch. The roof is flat except for a very <br />slight gable. <br />Murphey School and its associated buildings sit vacant but are undergoing restoration, in <br />coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office, for its future use as a retreat center for <br />non-profit agencies and a site rental facility for special events. <br />t "Orange County's New Schaofs,° Chapel Hilt Weekly., May 22, 9936, p.1. <br />
