A-~-fc~c~m~~~ Z

To: Laura Blackmon, County Manager
From: Todd Jones, Information Services Director
Date: May 7, 2009
Subject: Possible Broadband Partnership with Local School Districts
Following the April 16, 2009 work session, I contacted my counterparts at both school systems
about possibly partnering with them for .broadband services. They reminded me that schools
qualify for a special "e-Rate" pricing with broadband providers that is conferred only for school
and libraries. Thus, there is no viable common cost model that could be used between the
County and the school systems. Aside from cost incompatibilities, there are other logistical
obstacles regarding allocation of bandwidth between organizations' discrete Wide Area Network.
However, it would seem that the a-Rate issue is a deal breaker from the get go.
.,
.~
•
