a~ <br />Next she examined the materials housed in the locked cabinet. She identified items that <br />did not need special treatment and could be shelved in other locations. Ms McGrath noted <br />that she was being very conservative in her selection, feeling we would more than likely <br />find additional items that fell under this criterion. She also mentioned that minimum <br />preservation practices were fine for the rest of the materials. However, since office space <br />is very limited there is the concern of housing these items. There is also a concern about <br />the amount of light to which these books would be exposed. <br />Two important criteria to keep in mind came up during the last part of the meeting. The <br />first is to remember that books published during the late 19th (post-1880) and 20tH <br />Centuries by well known publishers (such as Edwards and Broughton, University of <br />North Carolina Press, and Houghton Mifflin) do not need the protection of a locked <br />cabinet unless they have some special added element like the author's signature. The <br />second is to remember to keep the library's main clientele as well as the usage of the <br />local history collection in mind when making collection development discussions. <br />
