A summary is
shown below:
1) Assign to the State Archives those original documents that have been stored away
and unavailable for public access due to age and deteriorating condition
These items are archival in nature and should be housed in a proper repository. The State
Archives has provided a letter identifying these documents and the statutes. that govern the
transfer (Attachment C, Executive Report). These documents will be preserved and
digitized in order to make them widely accessible via their website. These items include
sheriff's records, trial court records, justice dockets, and execution dockets.
2) Offer at the new library facility on W Margaret Lane a focused "core collection" of
local histories and genealogy documents (guided by recommendations of the state
genealogist).
The Library would remove outdated research materials, duplicates, and items now available
through online electronic databases such as: Ancestry.com and HeritageQuest. These
databases provide additional documentation that may be unavailable in sources such as
draft records of WWI and WWII, records of birth, death and marriages, Revolutionary War
Era Pension and Bounty -Land Warrant Application Files, and "Freedman Bank Records" -
from following the Civil War.
3) Maintain the "core collection" under minimum preservation practices.
4) Locate the "core collection" "In the new library facility on the 2"d floor adjacent to
the reference desk.
This will provide enhanced professional support, service and security from the Reference
Librarians, who will be located within 15 - 20 feet from the collection. The area will also
provide patrons with comfortable seating and tables for research, microfilm printer /reader
access, as well as a dedicated computer for database searches. The current vertical file
cabinet will be placed in the vicinity of the reference area for additional resource sharing.
The staff will also be working to develop guides to using the collection/databases, other area
collections and begin work on a new library website page that will include additional state
and national historical/genealogical information resources.
5) Insure the Confederate Triad lithograph for the estimated value of $1,000
