ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br />ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br />Meeting Date: May 5, 2009 <br />Action Agenda <br />Item No. ~ - G <br />SUBJECT: ~ Reappointment of Tax Assessor <br />DEPARTMENT: County Manager PUBLIC HEARING: (YIN) No <br />ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Laura Blackmon, 245-2300 <br />PURPOSE: To consider reappointing John Smith, Jr. as Orange County Tax Assessor for a <br />four-year term effective July 1, 2009. <br />BACKGROUND: Chapter 105-294 of the North Carolina General Statutes requires the Board of <br />County Commissioners appoint a tax assessor for a period of not less than two nor more than <br />four years. John Smith, Jr. was appointed as Orange County Tax Assessor in August 1996 to <br />complete the unexpired term of Kermit Lloyd. He was reappointed for two-year periods July 1, <br />1997 -June 30, 1999, July 1, 1999 -June 30, 1991, July 1, 2001 -June 30, 2003, and July 1, <br />2003 -June 30, 2005. Mr. Smith was reappointed to a four-year term beginning on July 1, <br />2005. <br />It is proposed that Mr. Smith be reappointed for afour-year term from July 1, 2009 through June <br />30, 2013. <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with consideration of the <br />reappointment. <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends the Board reappoint John Smith, Jr. as <br />Orange County Tax Assessor for afour-year term from July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2013. <br />
