Chatham County Board has just directed the Solid
Waste Advisory Committee to hold a series of public input meetings throughout the
County to obtain input on the consultants report and the conclusions that an in-county
landfill is considered the best long-term waste management option.
City of Durham -Contact: Donald Long, City of Durham Solid Waste Director
The City of Durham is not currently interested in or considering pursuing technological
disposal alternatives. Durham is currently discussing the possibility of privatizing their
commercial collection services and de-privatizing their recycling services. They are
unsure at this time if any of these changes will occur. Mr. Long is also discussing the
possibility of a feasibility study regarding improvements to their waste transfer
operations, should the study be funded and approved in the Fiscal 2009/10 budget.
Orange County is welcome to be a customer at their existing transfer station. Several
sincere attempts have been made over past years to partner or otherwise cooperate with
the City.
Lee County -Contact: Joe Cherry, Lee County Solid Waste Superintendent
Mr. Cherry indicated that he believes Lee County has no short to mid-term interest in
technological alternatives to land filling, absent an economic basis for doing so. Lee
County currently utilizes a private transfer station in Sanford and will likely utilize the
private disposal option for the foreseeable future. Lee County would be receptive to
learning about potential options for improving its current waste management practices
but is not actively seeking alternatives.
Wake County -Contact: Tommy Esqueda, Wake County Director of Environmental
Services
2
