`~' <br />^ The steam in turn can either be used to supply industrial processes, or it can be used to <br />spin a turbine to generate electricity, part of which can power the WTE plant with the <br />excess power sold to power companies or other users. <br />^ Is compatible with waste reduction and recycling programs and any large identifiable re- <br />cyclable material is removed before being placed into the charging hopper. <br />^ Both bottom and fly ash are generated at a rate of S to 10 percent by volume and 1 S to 20 <br />percent by weight of incoming waste. <br />^ Ash is usually processed in some manner to recover much of the ferrous metal that was in <br />the waste. <br />^ Additional processing of ash has been successful in recovering non-ferrous metals and <br />producing light aggregates for construction. <br />^ Ash must be tested for hazardous constituents and has routinely been found to be a non- <br />hazardous material. <br />A typical mass-burn facility is shown in Figure 1. <br />3 Apri116, 2009 <br />
