It is not a formal report of the <br />Institute of Government, nor is it the work of School of Government faculty. <br />Counties have no legal responsibility for fire protection. However, there are <br />various state statutes that outline legal requirements and options if a county <br />chooses to provide this service. This briefing memo summarizes these. It also <br />includes background information on fire service provision in several comparison <br />North Carolina counties. <br />
