Box 8181 Hillsborough, NC 27278 Dear Dr. Gordon: 20_0 EAS�K SIBEEI_.._ r_ ILIi LSBOROUGH, NC 27278 TELEPHONE: 919- 732 -8126 FAX: 919- 7324120 May 3, 1999 On behalf of the Orange County Board of Education, we would like to share with the Commissioners our decision to move forward with plans to shift the new elementary school from its current. location to accommodate the possible future locating of athletic fields and restrooms on this site. We understand the Commissioners are not willing to share in the initial cost of assisting us with this decision. It is our hope that our decision to provide space for future additions to this site will provide the opportunity for long -term benefit for our school and the children of northern Orange County. I would be remiss not to mention some concerns shared by our Board on this matter. We began discussions with a small group of community leaders several months ago about creating an opportunity that would benefit the school system, Town of Hillsborough, and the County Commissioners. The landowners agreed to donate the school site, which met our needs. They were willing to share in the expense of running water and sewer to the school, which would benefit the Town of Hillsborough and the school. They also expressed interest in donating additional land for a park, which would benefit the County, Hillsborough, and the schools. The landowner asked that this donation be considered for credit toward open space requirements, and/or the public use stipulations for new developments if this area was ever developed. The Commissioners would not make any commitment to the possibility of giving any consideration to that request. The Orange County Board of Education is very interested in the Commissioners accessing the Parks /Recreation Bond funds to add ball fields to the site of the new elementary school (fields I might add are needed in northern Orange County). It appears that this will not occur at this time. Our decision to move the school will allow the possibility of providing these ball fields at a later date. However, the cost of doing it then as opposed to proceeding with it now will increase substantially.
