Orange County to advocate for affordable housing issues in the County.
L. PUBLIC HOUSING RESIDENT INITIATIVES
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro Resident's Council continues to receive funds from the Town's
Comprehensive Grant Program.
The Resident's Council membership is open to all public housing residents as well as any
interested persons in the Chapel Hill community. The Council meets on the second
Tuesday of each month at the offices of the Department of Housing. The following topics,
among others, have appeared on their agendas: proposed HUD changes, activities for
youth and crime prevention measures.
Presently, the Resident's Council provides children's after school tutoring/mentoring
programs with the help of over 40 volunteers. Children are learning to manage their time;
express themselves with words and not. violent behavior; and appreciate the importance
of such character building words as responsibility, respect, courage, perseverance, and
honesty. In addition, the Council provides numerous referrals, including but not limited to,
employment, physical and mental health, home safety and personal finances.
The Town continues to provide an organizational structure that guarantees public housing
residents a forum to voice complaints, needs, concerns and ideas that guarantees
adequate response to residents through the monthly meeting of the Housing and
Community Development Advisory Board. Through these meetings, public housing
residents have participated in the management of the public housing program by providing
ideas and comments on the public housing operating budget and the renovation needs of
the apartments.
29
