Stine to conduct the accheological survey of the St. Mary's Road Corridor. BACKGROUND: In May, 1998, the BOCC accepted a $4,000 grant from the NC Division of Archives and History to begin a preservation planning study of the St. Mary's Road Corridor. The grant funds will be matched by $6,000 in County funds and $2,000 in-kind services. The first phase of the planning study will consist of a historic architectural survey and an archeological survey of the Corridor. In February, 1999, the BOCC approved a Request for Proposals for the archeological survey, which was distributed to a list of qualified consultants certified by the State Historic Preservation Office. Two proposals were received. After review and discussion of the proposals at their Mazch 24 meeting, the Historic Preservation Commission selected Linda F. Stine, Ph.D., an azcheologist from Julian, NC. The attached contract will employ Dr. Stine to conduct a survey of the archeological resources along the corridor. This survey, coupled with a historical azchitecture survey to be performed by GAI Consultants, Inc., will be part of an eventual Preservation Plan for the St. Mary's Road Corridor. FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. Funding for the contract ($6,476) is provided by the aforementioned grant and a cash match in the FY 1998-99 Environment and Resource Conservation Department budget. RECOMMENDATION: Administration Recommendation. The Manager recommends approval of the contract and recommends that the Board authorize the Manager to sign the contract on behalf of Orange County.
