I started teaching school in North Carolina with eight years
experience. having taught one year in Minnesota and seven in Regina.
Saskatchen. While living in Canada as a landed immigrant. I took
several courses of study in my field of special education and was able to
work with many types of handicapped children. I also participated in a
workshop on Blissvmbolics at the children's hospital in Toronto.
Ontario. This sparked an interest in teaching communication skills to
nonverbal children and has helped tremendously in my present position.
I am very thankful for having the opportunity to teach in different
school settings and for the knowledge and experi ence that I was able to
bring back to the States with me. Not only am I a better teacher for it but
my students are receiving a better education because of it.
I have a total of 18 years teaching experience, in addition to a
B.S. and a M.Ed. in my specific area. The 18 years of teaching
consisted of teaching in the public schools, 2 state residential
centers, and in the private sector. In addition to direct teaching,
I have supervised other teachers administratively, conducted and
published research, and have developed department wide curricula
which are still being used after several years of implementation.
Masters Deurree in Fducat1on:.Ut11%er ltx tit ()re(.!on: 1 )84
orth :_ i.ruiina Certiiicativn: }h -1? In 1988, I moved to North
Carolina and began teaching in Alamance County. For the past 5
years, I have been employed in Chapel Hill, teaching and coaching
at Chapel Hill High School. During my time in the classroom, I
have been chosen as Teacher of the Year for my school a total of 7
times, as well as being a finalist for that honor another 6 times. I
have also been Coach of the Year in my sports a total of 16 times
in my 26 years of coaching at the high school level.
