ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
Action Agenda
Item No. S_ q
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: June 1, 1999
SUBJECT: Resolution Honoring Carol Woods Retirement Center
DEPARTMENT: Economic Development Commission PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/1~
ATTACHMENT(S):
Resolution
INFORMATION CONTACT:
Dianne Reid
TELEPHONE N
Hillsborough
Chapel Hill
Durham
Mebane
UMBERS: - - ezt. 2325
732-8181
968-4501
688-7331
227-2031
PURPOSE: To recognize Carol Woods Retirement Center for outstanding corporate citizenship
for voluntarily adopting a livable wage policy for its employees.
BACKGROUND:
In 1994 the Orange County Boazd of Commissioners adopted a policy entitled "Towards a
Sustainable Community," which established the County's commitment to sustainability. An
important component of sustainability is the ability of workers to provide a decent standazd of living
for themselves and their families. In 1998, the Board of Commissioners codified this principal
through the adoption of a Personnel Ordinance revision to require a living wage of $8 per hour for
County employees. The Boazd also strongly encouraged employers doing business with the County
to pay the $8 per hour living wage.
The Orange County Economic Development Commission, as part of its 1996 Strategic Plan for
Economic Development, adopted a Statement of Corporate Citizenship which encourages
businesses to be good corporate citizens through their employment practices.
The Carol Woods Retirement Center has taken the lead among local private employers by adopting
a livable wage policy which provides a minimum of $8.00 an hour to its 280 full-time and part-time
employees.
The EDC and Boazd of County Commissioners wish to honor and commend leadership in corporate
citizenship by adopting a resolution to congratulate and recognize the Boazd of Directors and
management of Carol Woods Retirement Center as an Outstanding Corporate Citizen.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATON(S): The Manager recommends the Board adopt the attached resolution.
