4 <br />5/26/99 <br />Appendix B <br />1998 - Shaping Orange County's Future Citizen <br />Committees (Park and Recreation Issues) <br />Through the community visioning effort, Shaping Orange County's <br />Future, eight citizen committees identified qualities valuable to <br />maintain throughout the county. They also compiled a list of qualities <br />to either change or encourage. A partial list of these qualities, drawn <br />from the different committee reports, is as follows. <br />Existing Qualities to Maintain: <br />• Duke Forest and Eno River State Park as recreational areas <br />• Existing parks in Chapel Hill and Carrboro should d be maintained <br />and enhanced <br />Qualities to Change or Encourage: <br />• Encourage recycling bins at parks <br />• Encourage more facilities outside of towns <br />• Change lack of swimming pools <br />• Change lack of greenways in Rural Buffer <br />• Change lack of teen programs at recreational facilities <br />• Change lack of parkland north of Hillsborough <br />• Change means of funding parks and recreation facilities <br />• Change loss of open space (defined generally as forests or fields) <br />• Encourage more parks and schools /parks combinations <br />• Encourage better intergovernmental cooperation in parks planning <br />• Encourage multi -use paths in utility easements <br />• Encourage public transportation to parks <br />• Encourage implementation of parks and recreation plans <br />• Encourage use of existing publicly -owned lands for regional parks <br />
