12
5/26/99
Nash Street, south of the railroad tracks, were donated to the town in
1995. This land has historically been used for semi -pro baseball
activities and the town would like to reinstate its use for organized
sports, on a local scale. An estimated $26,000 is needed (in '96
dollars) to relocate sewer and electrical lines. Because the land is
adjacent to the Eno River, floodplain and wetland issues must also be
investigated.
Murray Street Park - The master plan for this 1/4 acre lot was
developed by local residents. $9,000 has been allocated for
construction of the project by the town board. $10,000 for phase 2
has been requested.
King / Occoneechee Street Park - Local residents have approached
the Park and Recreation Board with a proposal to develop this 0.6 acre
lot for a neighborhood park. No funds have, yet been requested.
River Walk - The town received a grant from the Clean Water
Management Trust Fund totaling $254,000 to acquire buffers along the
Eno River for water quality preservation. The buffer is planned to
connect Occoneechee Mountain Park on the west side of town with Eno
River State Park near US 70 bypass to the east. Funds have been
requested to hire a consultant to administer this project. The design
and planning for pedestrian access is still needed.
Sidewalks - Pedestrian access within the town of Hillsborough is
outlined in both Hillsborough's Parks and Recreation and
Transportation Plans.
5. Grant Funding Received
Each municipality within the County, as well as Orange County, have
received funds from various programs throughout the last couple
decades for the purpose. of constructing and improving recreational
facilities. These grant funds originate at various levels of government.
Examples of funding opportunities include the State Park and
Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF), North Carolina Department of
Transportation (NCDOT), the Clean Water Management Trust Fund,
the Community Development Block Grant Program (CDBG), and the
now defunct Federal Land and Water Conservation Fund. The range of
projects completed with these funds is broad. Examples of funded
Projects include nature trail construction, bike trail construction,
ballfield construction, and playground upgrades.
The following table illustrates the total amount of grant funding
received by Orange County and its municipalities within the last 20
years.
10
