17 <br /> Attachment 5A <br /> C3131-6/99 <br /> GIS TECHNICIAN <br /> GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK: <br /> Performs intermediate technical work collecting and analyzing data for GIS mapping and <br /> presentations; does related work as required. <br /> Work is performed under general supervision. <br /> TYPICAL TASKS: <br /> Creates, updates and maintains a comprehensive shared data base with information that <br /> includes addresses, subdivisions,building data,new developments and other socio- <br /> economic attributes; <br /> Collects data from other state/local government agencies; <br /> Conducts field studies for verification of location of roads and houses where necessary; <br /> Updates digital databases using ARCVIEW and/or ARC/INFO; <br /> Writes intermediary computer programs to facilitate the use of GIS software; <br /> Resolves and/or troubleshoots problems that may occur when data is merged; <br /> Serves as expert to staff with the use of GIS software and trains staff in the basic use of <br /> GIS and its applications; <br /> Acts as a resource for any questions or problems relating to GIS software; <br /> Uses GIS software to create maps; <br /> Distributes data to users in other County departments,municipalities,regional and State <br /> agencies, and post offices; <br /> Develops GIS presentation information(maps and analysis) for presentations to Board of <br /> County Commissioners,Planning Board and other public meetings; <br /> Performs related tasks as required. <br /> KNOWLEDGES. SKILLS AND ABILITIES: <br /> General knowledge of maps, databases and GIS; general knowledge of the principles, <br /> practices,techniques and equipment of GIS parcel mapping; general knowledge of GIS <br /> technology; skilled in the use of GIS computer hardware and software applications; <br /> ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with County departments, <br /> other state/local government officials,employees,community agencies, and the general <br /> public; ability to communicate ideas,both orally and in writing; <br /> EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: <br /> Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an <br /> accredited college or university with major course work in planning,geography, <br /> computer science, information systems or related field and at least 1 year experience <br /> working with automated databases, computer programs, GIS applications or related area; <br /> or graduation from an accredited community college with major course work in planning, <br /> geography, computer science, information systems or related field and at least 3 years <br /> experience working with automated databases, computer programs, GIS applications or <br /> related area. <br />
