Belk, Land Use & Preservation Planner <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: - -ext. 2594 <br />Hillsborough 732-8181 <br />Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br />Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To consider a recommendation from the Historic Preservation Commission to <br />recommend that the Maude Faucette House be submitted for listing in the National <br />Register of Historic Places. <br />BACKGROUND: The property is located in the Cheeks Township at the intersection of Bane Road and <br />Halls Mill Road (see Attachment #1). <br />On May 10, 1999, the Historic Preservation Commission received a letter from the <br />State Historic Preservation Office (see Attachment #2) enclosing a .proposed National <br />Register Nomination on the Maude Faucette House. (The National Register Nomination <br />Form is provided as Attachment #~. <br />As a Certified Local Government (CLG), Orange County has sixty (60) days from the <br />date of submission of a National Register nomination to make comments on the <br />proposal. If the County does not comment on the proposed nomination by July 8, <br />1999, approval of it is assumed. (CLG Information and Sample Comment Forms are <br />provided as Attachment #3). <br />In accordance with CLG guidelines, the Historic Preservation Commission is required <br />to provide an opportunity for public comment during the 60-day period. To meet this <br />requirement, the Historic Preservation Commission held a public hearing at their <br />meeting on May 26, 1999. (Draft minutes of the S/26/99 meeting are provided as <br />Attachment #S~. Notices of Public Hearing were published in accordance with the <br />Historic Preservation Ordinance and letters were sent via certified mail to all property <br />owners within 500 feet of the property being nominated to the National Register (The <br />Notice of Public Hearing is provided as Attachment #~. <br />Eligibility for the National Register is determined by a thorough evaluation of the <br />historic qualities and significance of a site, structure, or area. National Register <br />nominations are evaluated based on the following criteria: <br />
