AUG-13-99 FRI 10:3? AM ED KERWIN 9684421 P. 01
12
~.
~WA~A URA1vG~ WATER & SEWER ALITH~RITX
Qusl~ty service since 1977
August 13, 1999
Mr. John Link, Manager
County of Orange
P.O. Box 8181
Hillsborough, NC 27278
Dear John:
Thank you for your July 15, 19991etter requesting information regarding Jordan bake. In your letter you asked,
"...how OWASA's Jordan Lake property could be utilized to provide Jordan Lake access to Chatham, County
and other jurisdictions while ensuruig that its own access and that of Orange County are preserved?"
While I understand the importance of this question, I arrt not able to provide a specitxc reply at this time because
we have not evaluated this issue in detail. Additiona!-y, OWASA has aot, to date, received a specific request
from Chatham County or any other entity for the use of our property at Jordan Lake. Should we receive such a
request in the future, please be assured that we will evaluate it in terms of our own access, and that of Orange
County's.
With respect to the development of the agenda for the proposed September 2, 1999 itrieeting, Chatham County is
taking the lead them.
Sil~ce the October 1, 1998 Joint Meeting, OWASA sia~have attended several meetings with officials from the
state, Chatham County, the City of Durham, and others regarding possible regional approaches for Jordan Lake
water. At these meetings,l have expressed a willingness to explore the possible benefits of participating in a
regional approach. I clearly qualil'xed, however, that OWASA's interest was purely for gathering infornation as
part of our overall Master Planning effort, which includes an evaluation of regional partnerships. Our Master
Plan project is progressing nicely and is expected to be complete in the spring of 2000_
The OWASA Board reviewed this information at their August 12, 1999 meeting and suggested that the County
Commissioners speak with OWASA Board member Bernadette Pelissier should they have any questions
regarding this. matter. Ms. Pelissier can be reached as follows: Home phone number - 942-58b2; Work phone
number - 575-4541, ext. 4480; Email address - bpelissier@juno.cona.
I would be pleased to attend the August 17, 1999 meeting of the Orange County Board of County
Commissioners to discuss this matter further.
Very truly yours,
F.d Kerwin
Executive Director
c: OWASA Hoard of Directors
Cal Horton, Chapel Hill Town Manager
Bab Morgan, Catrboro Town Manager
Clkarlie Horne, Chatham County Manager
400 jonea ferry Road Equst Oppo~twiity,Eiriplo}rr Voice (919) 968-442 t
PO Boa 366 rrlne~d ws Recycled Paper FAX (9l9) 968-4464
Carr6om, NC 27510-0366
