Appendix A <br />Summaries of Existin4 Recreation and Parks Plans <br />1988 -Orange County Master Recreation and Parks Plan <br />The primary recommendations for the provision of County-wide recreation <br />services focus on specific policies for. park development within the townships in <br />the County. The majority of land for the proposed parks shall be provided by <br />public agencies throughout the County. Generally, the Master Plan recommends: <br />• The development of community parks within Bingham, Cheeks, Cedar Grove, <br />Eno, and Little River townships <br />• Four district parks scattered throughout county <br />• Construction of swimming pools at Chapel Hill and Orange High Schools <br />In determining the priorities of park development and land acquisition, the Plan <br />cites the requirement to consider immediate or pressing needs of the community <br />first. Priorities for land acquisition and development include the following: <br />1. Providing equitable distribution of recreational opportunities <br />2. Providing for areas of the County not currently being served <br />3. Providing for the greatest number of possible users <br />Chapel Hill Park and Recreation Planning Efforts <br />The Town of Chapel Hill currently operates without a Master Parks & <br />Recreation Plan. The Town anticipates beginning development of a master plan <br />i n FY 1999-00. <br />Some planning direction is provided by the 1989 Community Facilities Report <br />section of the Town's Comprehensive Plan, which recommended the <br />development of 4 community parks, 4 community centers, 17 neighborhood <br />parks, and 25 mini-parks by the year 2010. The Comprehensive Plan is currently <br />being updated and is scheduled for review. by the Council in late 1999. <br />The Town does have a Greenways Comprehensive Master Plan, which was <br />adopted in 1998. The plan recommends that 38 miles of linear open space be <br />preserved. The plan also recommends that 28 miles of linear open space be <br />improved with trails. The plan recommends a mix of paved and natural surface <br />trails. <br />Carrboro Recreation and Parks Comprehensive Plan <br />The Carrboro Board of Aldermen adopted a comprehensive plan for <br />recreation and parks services during 1995. Each ensuing year, the <br />
