TISSUE .
The existing County landscaping and buffering standards do not adequately
reflect recent national and international efforts to apply sustainability principles to
local land development projects. Also, the subject of Crime Prevention Through
Environmental Design (CPTED) is absent in the present County code.
PROPOSAL
To incorporate sustainable landscaping and tree preservation principles into the
Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Regulations and Economic Development Design
Manual through text amendments to each document. An alternative to inserting
new standards into multiple codes is to begin to create a Unified Development
Code which was a goat in previous years. The topic and how it can lead to better
organization and understanding of revised old codes and implementation of new
Comprehensive Plan objectives will be explained more in upcoming months.
PROCESS/TIME FRAME
Staff proposes to present amendments to Sections 12 and 22 of the Zoning
Ordinance at the February 2009 Quarterly Public Hearing. At that time the
B0CC may wish to refer the proposed amendments to both the Planning Board
and Commission for the Environment for review and recommendations.
Amendments to the Zoning Ordinance regarding sustainable landscaping will
implement several objectives listed in the Comprehensive Plan.
•
