Office of the Orange County Sheriff 19 <br /> Lindy Pendergrass,Sheriff <br /> P.O.Box 8181— v° <br /> 144 East Margaret Lase 1. <br /> Hillsborough,NC 27278 } , <br /> O'! easat�' <br /> February 5,2009 <br /> Mr.Chris Wood <br /> N.C.Department of Health and Human Services <br /> Division of Facility Services <br /> Jail and Detention Section <br /> P.O.Box 885 <br /> Troy,NC 27828 <br /> Dear Mr.Wood, <br /> We have reviewed your recommendations and required responses each are being addressed at this <br /> time; <br /> Overcrowding: <br /> 1.On the date of our inspection January 22,2009 we were 38 inmates over capacity.We had the 5 <br /> inmates back-logged with DOC.DOC had notified us that their buses were not running due to snow. <br /> On January 23 and 24 we transported a total of 8 inmates to DOC. <br /> 2.No courts were being held in Orange County which resulted in some misdemeanors being held waiting <br /> to go to District Court. <br /> 3.Our Board of Commissioners is cognizant to the need for additional bed space in the jail.They have <br /> already allocated funds and initial plans are being considered at this time. The architect came in on <br /> February 5,2007 and met with the Jeff Thompson,Construction Project Coordinator for Orange County. <br /> 4.I have met with the District Attorney and hopefully we can move some of the jail cases to trial and <br /> resolution. <br /> Exit doors: <br /> 1.We have addressed by memorandum to our jail staff the necessity of keeping the hall exit doors to <br /> upstairs and outside recreation closed. <br /> 2. Ice in the fire exit steps will be attended to immediately when we have ice and snow. <br /> 3. Officers will be more attentive to inmates in the annex moving their mattress in front of the exit doors. <br /> Inmates during the day do this for TV viewing. We will closely monitor this issue. <br /> Fire extinguishers: <br /> 1.The two fire extinguishers noted in your report have been checked and validated for use. <br /> Hood system in the kitchen: <br /> 1.We clean the hood every 6 months.The last cleaning was done on December 6,2008.Our next 6 <br /> month cleaning is set for June 6,2009. <br /> Fire alarm system: <br /> 1.The jail fire alarm system was inspected in July 2008 by Apex Fire Systems.Our 2009 inspection is <br /> due in June. <br />
