Gatti s, Acting Clerk <br />MINUTES OF THE ORANGE COUNTY <br />BOARD OF COMMISSIONIIi3 , <br />March 19, 1973 ~ <br />I <br />The Board of Commissioners of Orange County met on Monday, March <br />19, 1973, at 6:30 o'clock P, M. in special session at the Colonial Inn. <br />The meeting was later transferred to the courthouse. <br />i <br />Members Present: Chairman Norman Walker, and Commisaionere Henry S, i <br />Walker, Flora Garrett and Richard E, Whittad. <br />Members Absent; Commissioner Ira A. Ward, Commissioner Ward joined. i <br />the group at the courthouse later on in the evening. ' <br />W, P. Scarborough, District Highway CommissionerJ. Sam Tpnea, District ', <br />Engineer, Sohn Watkins, Division Engineer, and Bob Adams, Regional Coordinator <br />were present. <br />The meeting had been arranged at the request of the Hoard as they had <br />wanted tc meet the new Bighway Commissioner and members of his staff. <br />W. P, Scarborough inquired of the Board as to their opinions concerning <br />which roads in the primary and secondary ayatem that they felt should receive <br />top priority. The Board members responded on an individual basis, however, <br />it was agreed that in the primary system that highway #86 North from Chapel <br />Hill to Hillsborough and highway #51{. East and West from Chapel Hill should <br />receive first priority, There were no comments made relative to the <br />secondary ayatem, , <br />Commissioner Ira A. Ward posed the following questions: <br />What is the status of the new Chapel Hill School road that goes North <br />from Estes Drive? <br />Answer: It is now in the right of way atagea, <br />What is the status of Highway #$l.4 from Alamanae County to Carrboro? . <br />Answer: The Alamance County portion is complete. The western moat five <br />miles that runs into Orange County is under construction and the right of <br />way for the other portion has been secured, however, no funds are available <br />for the remaining portion. <br />What is the status of Highway $l~ East from Chapel Hi11 to Raleigh? <br />Answer: The project can only be considered sa being in the early planning <br />stages even tho soma rights of way have been secured, <br />What is the status of the secondary roads that were programmed last year? <br />Answer: All projects have been frozen pending on the approval of the <br />Highway Commission. <br />How does Highway 86 North from Chapel Hill to Hillsborough rate sa a <br />primary project? <br />Answer: The Highway Department considers it as one of the mast needed <br />projects in the County, <br />
