ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT Meeting Date: February 3, 2009 Action Agenda Item No. 4 - I SUBJECT: "Fit Community" Endorsement for The Arc of Orange County DEPARTMENT: County Manager's Office PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: Gwen Harvey, Assistant County Endorsement Form Manager, 245-2307 Robin Baker, Executive Director, The Arc of Orange County, 942-5119 PURPOSE: To recognize and affirm the "Fit Community" Grant Endorsement Form as executed by the Chair of the Board of County Commissioners on behalf of, and at the request of the grant applicant, The Arc of Orange County. BACKGROUND: The Arc of Orange County is a 501.c.3 private non-profit incorporated in 1979, to work with and for people who have or may be at risk for developmental disabilities. The Arc of Orange operates service programs throughout the community, including respite care, financial resources for families, vocational training and placement, summer internships and advocacy. In collaboration with Real Advocates Now Emerging (RANE), The Arc of Orange has begun the application process for Fit Community designation and potential grant awards. The Fit Community movement is a partnership between the NC Health and Wellness Trust Fund and Blue Cross and Blue Shield for a statewide campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of unhealthy weight and to equip individuals and communities with the tools needed to address this serious health concern. The designation and grant application process required an Endorsement Form to be signed by the County Commission Chair of the County for which the grant applicant was seeking the Fit Community designation. The grant deadline was Friday, January 16th. The Chair proceeded to authorize her signature for the form based upon information provided by The Arc of Orange County, in interest of meeting the grant submission deadline and with the understanding the Endorsement Form would be brought to the full Board for recognition and affirmation. The Endorsement Form as executed by the Chair is attached. FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with affirmation of the executed Endorsement Form. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends the Board recognize and affirm the Fit Community Endorsement Form for The Arc of Orange County.
