These petitioners <br />represented more than fifteen rercent (15;0) of the resident freeholders of <br />the area. <br />Lack petition had been signed b~* more tl^.an fifteen percent (15~) of _ <br />the resident freeholders of the respective areas. Chairman Bennett stated I <br />that under G,S, 69_25.1 the Soard was required to call an election on the <br />gvestion of whether taxable fire orntection distriata would be established <br />in the three areas. Discussion ensued. ~ <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Henry 8, Walker, seconded by Commissioner ' <br />Norman Walker, it was moved and adopted, that Saturday, June 3, 1972, be <br />designated as the election day on the question of establiahinee taxable ' <br />fire protection districts and that the Board of Commissioners inform the <br />Board of Elections of their action on this matter. <br />Discussion ensued relative to the water line which was being installed <br />alnng.Highway fib South. ~, <br />Upon motion of Commissioner Norman lJalker, seconded by Coirani.ssinner i <br />William C. Rav, it was moved and adoated trot the proposed water line be <br />extended approximately two hundred feet 200') further SoutY±*•rard along the <br />road. <br />Commissioner ?lard reported to the Board that the Joint Orange-Chatham <br />Comrmunity Action Agency had emended all of it.s funds for this fiscal year. ~ <br />Iie stated that the rederal grants which would have begun in February, 1972, <br />had not been funded due to the feat that the application for the needed <br />funds had oat been filed on lima. I?e stated that the Agency is without funds <br />to meet s.ny of i+.s financial comrnittmenta. <br />Chairman Bennett presented a letter from ides Fare, Prsaident of the <br />Joint Orange-Chatham Community .Setion Agency. Said letter recited the <br />financial plight in which. the -~genc4 foun3 itself and requested that $8,00.00, <br />temporary financial assistance, would enable them to continue operating until <br />the Federal funding is received. Chairman Bennett noted that a copy of this <br />latter had also been fortaarded to the Chatham County Soard of Commissioners <br />and that a like amount had been requested of t}.mt Board. 1 lengthly discussion <br />ensued on thin mx~tter, <br />Commissioner Xra A, ldar3 informed bre Hoard that the total budget of the <br />Community Action r',gency was anproaimatel7 $300,000.CO. Sa stated that a large <br />portion of this budget had been allocated for the operation of the Head. Start I <br />Program and the Family Planning Programs. 3oth of these programs are <br />directly connected *aith the County School System and the County Fealth <br />~. Department, l~s, ?~Iard stated that because of the total size of the .?gency~s <br />budget it would be impossible for the County to assume the entire funding o£ <br />these respective programs, however, he z'elt the agency did need financial <br />assistance at this particular time. <br />
